A Celebration of Life for Helen Joan Kern will be held October 8that the home of Jeff and Susie Pickett .

Email from Mike:  “Mom said she wanted her ashes spread at the coral beach volleyball courts where brother Jeff used to play volleyball.  When she requested that she thought Jeff’s ashes had already been spread there.  That isn’t the case.  Tamra still has Jeff’s ashes.  We have all decided to spread Jeff’s and Moms ashes together there in a personal family gathering with family members only.  Thank you everyone for all the condolences and interest in attending a funeral but this is the way we have decided Mom would like it to be done.”

Condolences can be mailed to Mike Kern and Family, 1475 Moreno, Simi Valley, CA 93063 and Susie Pickett and Family,  539 Valley Gate Road, Simi Valley, CA 93065.

Thanks,
Dick and Jo Ann

Joan Kern

All,
I had a lengthy visit with Susie, Joan's daughter, yesterday - September 6th.  The family will be having a Celebration of Life in memory of Joan at a later date.  No date has been set.
Susie shared that a lot of Joan's closest family and friends visited her over the Labor Day weekend bringing her gifts of food.  She did see a picture of her new Great Grandaughter at that time.
Monday morning the caregiver found her unresponsive.  She died peacefully in her sleep.

About Joanne Kern

All,

Update on Joanne's condition.  To bring you up-to-date:  Joanne fell in her kitchen and split her head open.  She was taken to the hospital where a MRI showed a mass at the base of her brain.  The mass was removed and was found to be cancerous.  Doctors believe the cancer came from her lungs.  She had just finished a round of radiation and was to undergo chemo treatments when she fell and hit her head on a coffee table in her home.  Mike and Susie found her laying in a pool of blood and she was taken by ambulance to the hospital.  Her fall reopened her surgery incision which had to be stapled again.  This was last Wednesday, June 22nd.

Dick just talked to Mike who was on his way out of the hospital.  Joanne had had a bad day/night on Saturday but was somewhat improved on Sunday.  They are treating her for pneumonia and she should get released after a week of antibiotics.  The kids will be talking to the doctors about after hospital care knowing she shouldn't be alone until she gets her strength back.

Dick calls every day......he can be reached at 515-681-4396.

Grandma Brooker's popsicles

Jason called and asked me for Grandma Brooker's popsicle recipe. I tried to give it to him from memory and he too thought I was close but I decided to do a search and see if I could come up with it. This recipe is it and they are ever so much more flavorful than any you can buy.

Recipe:   KOOL - AID POPSICLES        9/1/2010
Category: Delicious frozen treat
Author:   Grandma Brooker

1 sm. pkg. Jello, any flavor
1 envelope unsweetened Kool-Aid, same flavor
1 c. sugar
2 c. boiling water
2 c. cold water

Dissolve Jello, Kool-Aid and sugar in boiling water. Add cold water. Pour liquid into
small cups and place in freezer. When they are slightly firm insert popsicle sticks
into the cup. Freeze overnight. Our favorites are grape, cherry, and berry blue.
